Our

Students

-Re-connect with self

-Discover a new balance in     mind, body and spirit

-Remember what trust and   respect feels like

Our Students experience what it takes to become a reliable partner to their horse, their team and themselves.

Our Riding Academy begins its educational program at the hitching rail where students learn how to safely maneuver around a horse during grooming and saddling.

Safety checks on equipment are reviewed each time before mounting.

The riding session involves learning how to be a good leader to a herd of two... the student and the horse.

Here students learn to give clear signals for moving their horse forwards, backwards, left and right.

At the end of each session, everyone pitches in cleaning up the training area and putting away the tools and equipment.

The Riding Academy educational program aligns with, the Cowboy's Code of the West.

It is a great honor to care for these magnificent beasts. They have much to teach we humans in a magical way.

In the horse training industry, there is a phrase many folks use called "horse whispering". "Horse listening" may be a more appropriate term. Active listening teaches us to intuit a horse's level of response to an "ask."

A horse may really only need just a little whisper of pressure when asked to perform a task; and if there is a "try", then the horse is rewarded immediately with praise.

This forms mutual trust and respect for each other. Think of it as "less is more." This can be a valuable life-skill for humans and is learned through experiential education using the horse as a teacher.

We are happy to serve these gentle beasts who for centuries served we humans by carrying warriors to battle, plowing fields for agriculture, providing transportation, and then providing hours of therapy for those who needed it after war.

The history of riding therapies began in classical Rome with Hippocrites recognizing their value for balancing and re-balancing the wounded veteran.

In the early 1950s, polio stricken  Lis Hartel won Olympic Silver in Dressage, a riding style that is the personification of balance. She and her therapist in Denmark started the first therapeutic horseback riding center in the modern world. They named it hippo-therapy after the Greek word hippos for the horse.

Today the name has evolved into Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) or Equine Assisted Services. (EAS),
